A new international platform has been established at the United Nations headquarters in New York, with the ambition to fundamentally influence the future shape of global governance. The Group of Friends of Global Governance was officially founded with the participation of representatives from nearly forty founding states and under the leadership of China.
The inaugural meeting was chaired by Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN, who emphasised that the group's goal is to deepen the exchange of views and cooperation on key issues of global governance. According to him, the initiative aims to unite countries in defence of multilateralism and to work together towards a more just international order.
The group's creation stems from the Global Governance Initiative, which China is actively promoting on the international stage. Fu Cong pointed out that this is already the fourth global initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, following previous initiatives focused on development, security and civilisation. According to him, the new initiative is intended to bring Chinese experience and concrete solutions for reforming and improving global governance.
The Global Governance Initiative responds to the current needs of the world and the expectations of the public. According to Chinese diplomacy, it should contribute to stability and predictability at a time when the international environment faces growing uncertainty. More than 140 countries and international organisations have already expressed their support for this initiative.
In an interview with China Media Group, Fu Cong said that members of the new group highly appreciated the initiative and emphasised the need to uphold international justice, support the key role of the UN and reform global governance in the spirit of the Global Governance Initiative. The group is intended to be an open and inclusive platform that other countries with the same view of the world order can join.
China has also declared its readiness to cooperate with all countries on the full implementation of this initiative within the UN. The aim is to create a fairer and more rational system of global governance and to strengthen the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
