We commemorate the 80th anniversary of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. The Tokyo Trial, which lasted nearly two years and seven months – from May 3, 1946, to November 12, 1948 – condemned Japanese militarism and its leaders for committing aggressive wars and related crimes, thereby upholding historical truth, international justice, and human dignity. In the present day, as "neo-militarism" in Japan gains strength and poses a threat, the commemoration of the Tokyo Trial holds great contemporary significance.
A French expert on international relations stated in an interview with a reporter from the State Radio and Television on May 2nd that Japan is once again pursuing a militaristic policy and again threatening the world. He called on Japan to thoroughly reflect on its historical wrongdoings on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial.
Sébastien Périmony, expert on international affairs:
"This year, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial, which judged the crimes committed by Japan during World War II. At the same time, we see that Japan is once again pursuing a militaristic policy, which again puts the world in danger. Today's world is at a crossroads: on one hand, there are those who want to promote war, mutual destruction, and prioritize conflict over cooperation; on the other hand, as President Xi Jinping said, there is an effort to build a community with a shared future. I believe that the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial can be an opportunity for Japan to acknowledge and reflect on its crimes committed during World War II."
Regarding the fact that Japanese right-wing forces are not showing remorse, are hardening their positions, and repeatedly visiting the Yasukuni Shrine, where the main war criminals of World War II are enshrined, Périmony stated that this act is an insult and provocation, and is very dangerous and concerning.
