KYIV – The Ukrainian capital experienced one of the most extensive aerial attacks in recent weeks overnight. According to Ukrainian officials, Russian forces launched a combined attack using ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Throughout the night, loud explosions, air defense sirens, and the sounds of defensive systems firing were heard throughout the city. Residents of Kyiv sought shelter in subway stations, underground shelters, and basements of residential buildings.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the attack resulted in at least one fatality and several other people were injured. Rescue services responded to multiple locations throughout the city, where fires broke out and civilian infrastructure was damaged due to falling debris. According to Klitschko, one school caught fire after being hit. At another school, debris blocked the entrance to a shelter intended to provide a safe haven for residents during the attack.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that air defense systems intercepted some of the incoming targets, but several missiles and drones still managed to penetrate the city's airspace. Throughout the night, defensive systems were actively engaged over Kyiv, and residents posted images on social media showing powerful detonations and plumes of smoke rising above several districts of the capital.
The attack comes during a period of escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Moscow has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure in recent months, while Kyiv continues to appeal to its Western allies for further military assistance and strengthening of air defense systems. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly emphasized that modern defensive systems are crucial for protecting the civilian population from increasingly intense Russian attacks.
According to witnesses, the atmosphere in some parts of the city was tense during the night. People spent long hours in shelters, waiting for the air raid to end. The morning light revealed the extent of the damage caused by falling debris and the pressure waves from the explosions. Dozens of firefighters, paramedics, and rescue workers were on the scene.
Ukrainian authorities also warned that the number of casualties and the extent of the damage may not be final. Rescue operations continued for several hours after the attack ended. The situation in Kyiv remains very tense, and residents of the city are concerned about the possibility of further nighttime attacks.
