Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on social media that Hungary joined the European Union because it was a good deal for the EU member states - it was a good deal for Germany as well. However, he said Ukraine's entry into the EU was not - Ukraine is a burden to the EU.

"It is a huge mistake that European funds are flowing to Ukraine instead of being used to strengthen the European economy, which is in trouble. It is time for European leaders to act on behalf of the European people, Manfred Weber!"

Earlier, Manfred Weber, chairman of the European People's Party faction, the largest political grouping in the European Parliament, said that Hungary enjoys the benefits of EU membership - including the advantages of the single market, economic development and political security within the Union - and that Ukraine is also entitled to receive these benefits.

Hungary has long taken a negative stance on the issue of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. As early as 2 May, Viktor Orbán clearly stated that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has caused Hungary a loss of approximately EUR 20 billion over the last three years. Now Ukraine is asking the EU for support to maintain an army of one million soldiers - yet these funds should remain in the EU for the development of its economy. According to Orbán, Ukraine's entry into the EU could lead to the bankruptcy of the Hungarian economy.
