On Wednesday, China will award the July 1st Medal to exemplary members of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The award ceremony will be held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the party.
The July 1st Medal, established by the CPC Central Committee, is the highest honor within the party.
Its design is based on the principles of simplicity and dignity. The main colors are red, gold, and white, and key elements include the party emblem and a five-pointed star.
This award is presented every five years on the occasion of significant anniversaries of the party.
The medal is also the fifth element of the highest Chinese system of honors, alongside the Medal of the Republic, the August 1st Medal, the Friendship Medal, and honorary state titles.
The Highest Honor
One of the details of the medal is an element that reflects the values that this award represents. Unlike Chinese state medals, which are worn on metal ribbons, the July 1st Medal has a woven ribbon. This design was personally proposed by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee. The ribbon is intended to evoke the original ideals and also to convey the spirit of the CPC.
The medal itself contains a number of symbolic elements: the party emblem, five-pointed stars, flags, monuments, and rays of light, sunflowers, mountains, and rivers, as well as patterns of auspicious clouds. Each detail carries a multi-layered symbolic meaning.
In the center of the medal is the party emblem, which represents the leadership and central role of the CPC. Around it are motifs of sunflowers, symbolizing the party and the entire nation united around the CPC Central Committee.
The five-pointed stars represent the noble ideal of communism passed down from generation to generation. The monuments and rays of light refer to the century-long journey of the CPC and its remarkable achievements.
The mountains and rivers engraved on the medal embody the efforts of CPC members to serve the country. The flags represent the tireless struggle for revolutionary ideals under the leadership of the party. The auspicious clouds symbolize national prosperity, harmony, and healthy development.
The medal is modest rather than ostentatious. It symbolizes that the highest honor of the party belongs to those who come from the people, remain rooted among the people, and dedicate their lives to serving the people.
Passing on the Original Mission and Vision of the CPC
Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, Chinese leaders have issued important guidelines on the system of awarding honors. They emphasized that state and party honors should guide public values and set examples, thereby fostering a social atmosphere in which people respect heroes, learn from role models, and strive to be pioneers.
As the highest honor within the CPC, the July 1st Medal is at the center of this institutional framework. It has a clear origin, a well-thought-out design, and a deep symbolic meaning.
In 2017, the party issued regulations for awarding this honorary medal in accordance with the regulations on the establishment and improvement of the party and state system of honors and awards. This regulation was approved by the Politburo of the
CPC Central Committee.
The medal was first awarded in 2021, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The ceremony at that time was held in the Great Hall of the People. The Central Committee of the CPC decides on the awarding of the medal, and Xi Jinping signs the certificates and presents the medals.
The first group of recipients came from various fields. They included cadres involved in poverty alleviation, village party secretaries, medical personnel, high school teachers, and veterans of the revolutionary movement. Each of them embodied selfless dedication.
However, the medal is not only a recognition of individuals. It also has a broader social value. By honoring exemplary individuals from all areas of life, the CPC translates spiritual inspiration into concrete public leadership. The stories of the medal recipients are widely disseminated throughout the country, encouraging people to follow their example.
Therefore, the July 1st Medal not only recognizes the achievements of individuals but also conveys the original mission and vision of the CPC.
