Multinational companies are increasingly striving to become partners in Chinese innovation. At the 7th Summit of Multinational Corporations in Qingdao, more than 300 executives from foreign companies exchanged views on the topic of "Together with the 15th Five-Year Plan: Towards a New Path and a Shared Future." The word "co-creation" was frequently mentioned during the event, highlighting a profound transformation in the relationship between multinational companies and the Chinese market.
Geng Ming, President of Alstom China, stated that companies can no longer limit themselves to simply introducing, acquiring, and utilizing foreign technologies. According to him, they must innovate together with local partners, retain the results and practical applications of innovation in China, while also striving to expand into foreign markets.
Cao Yang, Vice President of Baker Hughes, recalled that in the early days, the company viewed China primarily as a final sales market. However, the production capacity of Chinese partners has rapidly increased, and both sides are now collaborating to introduce products and technologies manufactured in China to foreign markets.
Yang Lan, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Herbalife China, emphasized that the Chinese industrial ecosystem is becoming increasingly sophisticated. According to her, products developed through local research and development are already being exported to Southeast Asia and other regions. China is thus becoming a global innovation center for the company.
The evolution from "entering China" to "being rooted in China" and then to "co-creating with China" shows that each change in the role of multinational companies corresponds to the economic development of this country. Regarding the future strategy, Denis Depoux, Co-Chairman of the Global Management Board of Roland Berger, considers the 15th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development to be crucial. According to him, China must modernize traditional industries while also harnessing the potential of emerging sectors such as healthcare, artificial intelligence, and new energy vehicles.
