Overview of the latest economic events in the Czech Republic
The average mortgage loan rate in the Czech Republic fell slightly by 0.01 percentage point month-on-month to 4.93 % at the beginning of February. The decline was mainly reflected in one- and three-year fixings, while rates for five- and ten-year fixings rose slightly. The data is based on the Swiss Life Hypoindex, which tracks mortgage offer rates for financing approximately 80 percent of the value of a property. The development confirms a cautious stabilisation of the credit market, although banks such as Česká spořitelna, ČSOB nebo Komerční banka continue to adjust their bids in line with interbank rates and inflation.
Important news from the industry is the company's performance Tatra Trucks, which produced 1,349 trucks in Kopřivnice in 2025 and sold 1,337 units, a decrease in production volume compared to the previous year. Despite this, the company's production output rose year-on-year and sales increased by five per cent, reflecting the growth in contract value and the modernisation of its product portfolio. The company's results strengthen the export position of the Czech engineering industry and also signal stable demand for specialised trucks in both the defence and civil sectors.
Foreign investment
Several major investment and acquisition moves have emerged on the global scene that may affect international capital flows and European industry. Investment Group KKR for example, completing the acquisition of Arctos valued at approximately $1.4 billion, expanding its portfolio of investments in sports and media assets.
Another important step concerns the energy sector, where companies Devon Energy a Coterra Energy confirmed the merger as an all-stock merger with expected synergies and annual savings of around one billion dollars.
Consolidation efforts are continuing in the banking sector. Group Santander announced its acquisition plan Webster Bank for $12.2 billion to strengthen its position in the U.S. retail banking market. At the same time U.S. Bancorp continues to pursue a transaction to acquire the company BTIG Parent for a combination of cash and stock worth over $600 million.
In the technology sector, the company Alphabet expands its data center infrastructure through the acquisition of a company Intersect, to strengthen the energy and technology backbone of cloud services.
There are other capital movements in the energy sector. Companies TotalEnergies a Petrobras faces complications in its acquisition of offshore interests in Namibia's Lüderitz Basin, highlighting the regulatory risks associated with international energy investments. These transactions confirm the growing competition for strategic raw material resources.
Significant events outside the Czech Republic with global impact
Global markets were mainly influenced by commodity prices and geopolitical factors. The gold price held at elevated levels, supported by geopolitical uncertainty and investor demand for safe-haven assets. Silver showed a similar trend, responding not only to investment demand but also to industrial use in the technology sector. Oil experienced increased volatility, particularly as Indian refiners cut back on purchases of Russian crude as they seek alternative suppliers in the context of new trade negotiations with the United States.
At the same time, global investors are watching developments in Asian capital markets, where political changes in Japan have led to a strengthening of equity indices and a weakening of the bond market. These movements may affect foreign capital flows and exchange rates.
