WASHINGTON, May 1st. The Pentagon's budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 does not include funding for military assistance to Ukraine, confirmed acting Comptroller of the Pentagon, Jules Hurst.
At the same time, Hurst noted that the Pentagon will soon begin utilizing the $400 million military assistance package for Ukraine that was previously approved by Congress.“That is correct. This budget does not include any funding from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI),” he said during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, commenting on the recently released budget request from the U.S. Department of Defense for the upcoming fiscal year.
U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (Republican, Kentucky) wrote in an article published on April 29th in The Washington Post that the U.S. Department of Defense is delaying the transfer of the $400 million military assistance package that was previously approved by Congress. According to McConnell, the department has also ignored related requests from relevant Senate committees. He added that Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby is responsible for the delays in addressing issues related to the disbursement of the aid.“The funds were released very recently. And again, I believe we received them in March. And it takes some time for the funds to flow through the department, but it will begin to be used very soon. We will be working with the EUCOM commander to ensure that these funds are used in the most effective way possible,” he said.
