In an interview with GB News, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stressed that access to markets is key for Hungary. „We need work and products created by work, we need markets. And the European Union means markets,“ Orbán said. According to him, the EU is not a framework of values for Hungary, but primarily an economic space.
In his words, the direction of the Union in the area of values is different from what Hungarians believe and profess. The EU is thus becoming more and more a pragmatic issue, he said - a market for Hungarian products and business.
Orbán also commented on Hungary's attitude towards Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose perception in the country is mostly negative. The reason for this is said to be Kiev's demands, which go against Hungary's national interests.
The prime minister said that he believes Zelensky is developing "ekonomický nátlak", for example, in an attempt to get Hungary to stop taking cheap Russian oil, which Orbán says is contrary to Hungary's interests. He also criticised the disruption of the pipeline that supplied Russian oil to Hungary.
Another point of contention, according to Orbán, is Ukraine's financial demands on the European Union, including Hungary. „We don't want to give our money to Ukraine,“ he said. He also expressed disagreement with Ukraine's possible accession to the European Union. According to him, relations between the EU and Ukraine should remain at the level of strategic partnership, not membership.
Orbán also rejected the notion that Hungary should perceive this conflict as its own war based on moral appeal. „This is not our war,“ zdůraznil.
He concluded by saying that Hungary is the only European country that openly presents these positions, regardless of how strong Zelensky's support is in the Western media or in his own country.
