Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday clearly rejected US President Donald Trump's remarks that Canada's existence was dependent on the United States.
Carney spoke in Quebec City and stressed Canada's sovereignty. He was reacting to Trump's words, which he uttered after returning from Davos without meeting the Canadian Prime Minister in person.
„Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership - in the areas of economics, security and cultural exchange,“ Carney said. „But Canada does not live because of the United States. Canada prospers because we are Canadians.“
Trump's remarks were made at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the president claimed that „Canada lives because of the United States“ and advised Carney to take it „remembered“ the next time you're here. Trump's statement was in response to Carney's speech on Tuesday, in which the Canadian prime minister warned of the disintegration of US hegemony and called on smaller states to resist pressure from the major powers.
