Cubism - Sharp edges, intersecting surfaces, crystalline structures - typical elements of Czech Cubism, a unique movement born in Prague around 1910. The avant-garde painting movement of the early 20th century, made famous by Pablo Picasso, also found creative expression in architecture in Bohemia.
The cubist, coldly elegant geometric shapes are unparalleled in the world. A famous example is the House at the Black Mother of God with the Grand Café Orient in the centre of Prague. By disrupting verticals and horizontals, the Czech cubists sought to break down conventional notions of design and architecture, to release or capture the inner energy of matter in motion, and to give the objects with which one comes into daily contact the form of a dynamic work of art. The most famous architects and designers were Josef Gočár, Pavel Janák, Vlastislav Hofman and Josef Chochol.
