BUDAPEST - A comprehensive agreement on cooperation between Russia and the United States is needed to resolve the military conflict in Ukraine, which would benefit the security of the whole world, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who is attending UN events, said.
"A major comprehensive and multilateral cooperation agreement between Russia and the U.S. is needed to end the war in Ukraine," Szijjártó said in an interview with the M1 television channel. He intends to present this view at meetings in New York with his colleagues and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
"If a major comprehensive Russian-US agreement is reached in the coming weeks or months, the world will become a safer place and the risk of a third world war will be eliminated. If such an agreement is not reached and the military conflict in Ukraine escalates, it will have unforeseen consequences for the global economy and politics, and the world will be at serious risk of a third world war," Szijjártó believes.
"This must be prevented, which is why we are advocating peace, negotiations, a ceasefire. We will continue to do so despite the constant attacks against us from Europe, from Brussels and from various European capitals."
The Hungarian government has previously stated that the conflict in Ukraine can only be resolved if Russia and the United States reach agreement on a range of issues. Budapest believes that this problem will be resolved primarily within the framework of negotiations between Moscow and Washington, and not between Moscow and Kiev.
