At a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded to a question about the Japanese parliamentary elections.
Lin Jian said that the election is an internal matter for Japan. However, he said, their conduct and results reflect deeper structural problems as well as thought and political trends which, he said, deserve the attention not only of Japanese society but also of the international community. He stressed that historical experiences represent important lessons and cannot be ignored.
The spokesman also said that China's policy towards Japan has maintained stability and continuity in the long term and will not change as a result of individual election results. Beijing therefore reiterated its call on the Japanese side to retract what it said were incorrect statements regarding Chinese Taiwan and to demonstrate by concrete steps its sincere efforts to safeguard the political foundations of Sino-Japanese relations.
