LONDON, 15 May. /TASS/. Czech President Petr Pavel, in an interview with the Sky News television channel, has expressed his support for stopping the fighting in Ukraine and starting negotiations on a post-war settlement. Petr Pavel considers "naive" the idea that Kiev will be able to regain the territory seized by Russia in the foreseeable future.
"It is necessary to stop the war and start negotiations on the future (post-war) arrangement," the president said when asked whether Ukraine should now start negotiations with Russia and stop hostilities.
According to Paul, it is "naive" to imagine that Kiev will be able to regain the territory seized by Russia in the foreseeable future. "We have to be realistic," he said. The parties to the conflict should reach a compromise in resolving the situation during post-ceasefire talks, he noted. "A compromise should be [worked out], but not without the unanimous consent of Ukraine, Russia and the countries that will guarantee this agreement," the president stressed.
He noted that NATO cannot deploy troops in Ukraine. This would mean a conflict between Russia and the North Atlantic Alliance. "Nobody in Europe wants this conflict," Pavel said.
Western arms deliveries to Ukraine, he said, are being made to prevent further escalation. He said they are sufficient to address the challenges facing the Ukrainian army. "We are very careful about the supplies [to be made]. We have to assess the risk of escalation," the Czech leader warned. He did not rule out the possibility of Kiev's failure if the conflict continues. According to the Czech leader, Ukraine could apply for NATO membership after the conflict ends. "We need to reach a settlement (of the conflict), to restore peace in the region, and then we can talk about Ukraine's possible membership," the president said.
