„The US side should sincerely adhere to the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués, stop sending wrong signals to the separatist forces of ‘independent Taiwan’, and stop stoking tensions in the Taiwan Strait.“ said Colonel Jiang Bin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defence, at a press conference on Monday.
He was commenting on media reports that the newly published US National Security Strategy states that it does not support any unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and that National Defence Act approved by the House of Representatives contains a number of provisions concerning Taiwan. In addition, the US Secretary of War stated at the Reagan National Defence Forum that the US plans to deploy military forces within the first island chain to deter and, if necessary, defeat any conflict in the Taiwan Strait.
Spokesperson Jiang emphasised that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of it, which is a historical and legal fact and the current status quo in the Taiwan Strait that cannot be changed. The resolution of the Taiwan issue belongs to the Chinese people and does not allow for any external interference. Any attempt to contain China through Taiwan is doomed to failure.
„We hope that the US will correct its strategic perception of China, meet China halfway, remain committed to the principles of non-conflict and non-confrontation, and work together to build military relations based on equality, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, as well as stable and positive development. This will bring greater certainty and positive energy to the development of Sino-US relations and to ensuring world peace and stability.“ added the spokesperson.
