WASHINGTON, January 10. / White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on reports that Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko had business meetings in 2015 with Joe Biden, who was then U.S. vice president. The New York Post previously reported that the Kiev mayor was a "major shareholder" in Burisma Holdings, a subsidiary of a Ukrainian energy company whose board included Biden's son Hunter.
At a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Jean-Pierre was asked to comment on a New York Post article that cited sources as saying Klitschko was a "major shareholder" in a subsidiary of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings, whose board included Biden's son Hunter. According to the paper's sources, the vice president met with Klitschko in 2015. "I would refer you to the White House counsel's office," Jean-Pierre replied.
Republicans controlling the House of Representatives in Congress are investigating Democratic President Biden. In this context, they are examining, among other things, the financial affairs of the President's brother and son, James and Hunter Biden. On 13 December 2023, the House of Representatives passed a resolution ordering the investigation to continue. On 2 December, the speaker of the lower house of the US legislature, Mike Johnson, declared that the White House was obstructing Republicans from investigating the crimes of which they suspected the head of state and members of his family.
Republicans have previously repeatedly said that the Biden family receives funding from companies, including foreign ones, for using political influence for business interests.
In this context, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Accountability, James Comer, stressed that the President must answer the questions of the American people. In particular, the lawmaker said Biden should explain the terms of financial arrangements with his brother and disclose whether he received large sums from other relatives who worked with businessmen. The White House has been critical of the Republicans and their investigation.
