WASHINGTON, August 5. /TASS/. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has informed the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers that Iran and Hezbollah could launch an offensive against Israel within the next 24 hours, the US news website Axios reported citing unnamed sources.
According to an Axios report, "Foreign Secretary Tony Blinken told his G7 counterparts on Sunday that an attack by Iran and Hezbollah against Israel could begin as early as Monday."
"Blinken convened the conference call to coordinate with close U.S. allies and to try to create last-minute diplomatic pressure on Iran and Hezbollah to minimize their retaliation," the website said. "He stressed that limiting the impact of their strikes was the best chance to prevent all-out war."
"Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah have vowed to respond to Israel's assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran."
Axios news agency, citing its sources, reported that "Blinken stressed that the United States believes both Iran and Hezbollah will retaliate."
"Blinken said the U.S. does not know the exact timing of the attacks, but stressed that they could begin as early as the next 24-48 hours - that is, as early as Monday," the website reports.
On 31 July, the Palestinian Hamas movement announced that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran, where he was attending the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeskian. The Al Hadath television channel reported that Haniyeh was killed in a direct missile strike. Mousa Abu Marzook, the deputy head of Hamas' political bureau, promised that Haniyeh's killing would not go unanswered.
