Following the launch of the US military operation against Venezuela, US President Donald Trump spoke with the country's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, by phone for the first time. The conversation took place on 14 January local time.
Trump subsequently said that the meeting was „very pleasant“ and that he believes relations between the United States and Venezuela are moving in a positive direction.
After the phone call, Rodríguez said the conversation was conducted in a spirit of mutual respect. She said the two sides discussed the bilateral work agenda, issues of common interest and also outstanding issues between the two governments.
It was the first direct contact between Trump and Rodríguez since January 3, when the United States launched a large-scale military operation against Venezuela. During that operation, President Nicolás Maduro Moros together with his wife and subsequently taken to the United States.
