SARANSK, January 31. U.S. President Donald Trump's support for stability-damaging weapons programmes will not contribute to dialogue on strategic offensive weapons, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a press briefing.
She pointed to US President Donald Trump's recent "Iron Dome for America" executive order, which entails "a sharp intensification of the national missile defence project and its expansion to a scale comparable to (former US President Ronald Reagan's) Star Wars strategic defence initiative". and added:"We see this as further confirmation of the US focus on turning space into a theatre of armed confrontation and weapons deployment," Zakharova said. "The U.S. approach will in no way contribute to reducing tensions or improving the situation in the strategic sphere, including creating a basis for a fruitful dialogue on strategic offensive weapons."
On January 28, Trump signed an executive order to create a next-generation missile shield in the United States. He called it the Iron Dome for America, similar to Israel's missile defense system, and instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to submit a design and plan for the system within 60 days.
