NEW YORK, August 30. US Democratic presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, has declared that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip "must end".
"We have to reach an agreement. This war has to end and we have to make a deal that involves the release of hostages," she told CNN.
In her first joint television interview with opposing candidate Tim Walz since accepting the Democratic presidential nomination, Harris also said she was committed to "pursuing a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
The presidential candidate avoided answering directly whether she was prepared to limit arms supplies to Israel, but confirmed her support for the Israeli government.
"I am unequivocally and unwaveringly committed to supporting Israel's defense and its ability to defend itself," she said.
Tensions in the Middle East flared again on 7 October 2023, when gunmen from the radical Palestinian Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip launched a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking over 240 hostages, including women, children and the elderly. Hamas described its attack as a response to the Israeli authorities' aggressive actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City. In response, Israel has declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip, where 2.3 million Palestinians lived before the crisis, and has launched air strikes on Gaza as well as on parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes have also been reported in the West Bank.
