Over the years, the BRICS mechanism has evolved from its original economic concept into a platform for comprehensive cooperation. This was stated by Xie Hongjun, a researcher at the BRICS Research Center at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), in an interview with CGTN, a BRICS TV partner.
The expert stressed that he has high hopes for the upcoming BRICS summit in Brazil, as it is the first meeting of leaders of the enlarged group of countries. According to him, the summit will bring new content to key areas of cooperation in the trade and economic spheres.
"First, it is about the creation of a BRICS Trade Promotion Committee to harmonise certification processes and customs procedures, which will facilitate trade between the countries of the group, sustainable development and innovation in business. Second, it is about strengthening the BRICS technology exchange mechanism to promote cooperation among member countries in areas such as new energy, artificial intelligence and sustainable development," Xie Hongjun explained.
He expressed the view that the summit would discuss three main topics: deepening trade and economic cooperation, reforming global governance and jointly addressing global challenges through BRICS institutional development. According to the expert, the focus will be on making progress on mutual payments in national currencies, coordination of supply chains and digital trade.
"Of course, the management of artificial intelligence will also be a key topic. The main question is how to ensure that control of neural networks serves the interests of the whole world, not just a small group of countries," Xie Hongjun added.
The meeting of the BRICS Heads of State and Government will take place in Rio de Janeiro on 6-7 July and will be the main event of the Brazilian Presidency of the Association.
