President Xi Jinping received Panchen Rinpoche in Beijing and urged him to play an active role in promoting ethnic unity, religious harmony and modernisation in the autonomous region of Xizang (Tibet). The President, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the importance of national unity and spiritual leadership.
During the meeting, Panchen Rinpoche presented the president traditional silk snake scarf and informed him of his recent studies and work. Xi Jinping appreciated his efforts and urged him to further developed patriotic and spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, deepening academic knowledge and contributing to the consolidation of of belonging to the Chinese nation.
Panchen Rinpoche said that he would follow the example of the previous Panchen Lama, to defend national unity, encourage ethnic cohesion and contribute to adapting religion to the Chinese context and the modernization of Xizang.
