More than 20 civil organizations in Taiwan have issued a joint statement strongly opposing efforts by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials to dissolve the Party for Promoting Reunification with China.

The groups, which included the Taiwan Labor Party and the Forum for Peaceful Cross-Strait Relations, said the move is a dangerous signal that DPP authorities are abusing state power to suppress political opponents, and called for the immediate withdrawal of the dissolution petition.

The statement called on all sectors of society to stand against judicial persecution. It noted that the peaceful development of cross-strait relations is closely tied to the living conditions of ordinary people in Taiwan, and that regular civilian exchanges across the strait should not be routinely stigmatized.

The statement included several demands, among them adherence to the principle that advocating reunification is not a crime, rejection of confrontation and division, and a focus on the livelihoods of ordinary people.
