In his keynote speech, Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, stated that reform and improvement of global governance is a historical mission for this generation, and that such a task requires strong conviction and tireless effort. He called for efforts to support the reform of the United Nations to make the world organization more effective and the Security Council more authoritative and capable. He said that the goal of UN reform is to strengthen the world organization, not to weaken it, and that UN reform should be led by member states and carried out fairly, inclusively, and transparently.
Wang Yi emphasized the importance of strengthening the voice of developing countries and small and medium-sized countries, especially by addressing the historical injustices that Africa has faced. He also called for efforts to adapt UN peacekeeping operations to the needs of the times, build international consensus on accelerating development, steer global human rights governance in the right direction, and deepen reform of the economic and financial system. Wang Yi also called for the establishment of rules for the governance of artificial intelligence, stronger governance in emerging areas such as cyberspace and space, and greater exchange between civilizations.
He said that the Group of Friends of Global Governance serves as a stabilizing force and a force for justice in a turbulent world, and that this mechanism should be further utilized and strengthened. China will continue to uphold the banner of multilateralism and contribute to global governance through its experience in governance. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers and representatives from more than 60 countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, and Zimbabwe. UN Under-Secretary-General Amina Mohammed briefed the participants on the relevant situation. According to Wang Yi, the Group of Friends of Global Governance reached consensus on five key points regarding global governance.
First, all members support the democratization of international relations, said Wang Yi, noting that all countries, regardless of size, strength, or wealth, have the right to choose their own social system and development path, and to participate in, decide on, and benefit equally from global governance.
Second, all members call for adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, ensuring equal application of international law and international rules, and resisting double standards and coercion, he said.
Third, all members support the central role of the UN, the practice of multilateralism, and the strengthening of multilateral mechanisms, and oppose unilateralism and power politics, said Wang Yi.
Fourth, Wang Yi said that all members support the reform and improvement of global governance and the narrowing of the gap between the North and the South, so that all countries can share the benefits of development and no country is left behind.
Fifth, all members also call for addressing the most pressing challenges facing the international community through concrete steps and practical results, to ensure that global governance meets the needs of the times and the people, he added.
