On Friday, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to discuss the current state of the global economy and international trade, preparations for the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), and the ongoing reform of the organization.

During the meeting, Wang Wentao emphasized that China firmly supports the multilateral trading system and upholds the fundamental principles of the WTO, including the most-favored-nation clause. He stated that the WTO should play an even more important role in improving global economic governance and contributing to the stability of the international trading order.

The Chinese Minister also noted that member states of the WTO should focus on finding consensus on unresolved issues in the coming period. He mentioned, for example, the continuation of the suspension of tariffs on electronic transmissions, which remains one of the discussed topics within the organization.
