STRASBOURG, February 29, 2024 – The European Parliament today approved a resolution that urgently calls for an increase and acceleration of military aid to Ukraine. The appeal is primarily directed at militarily strong member states, led by France, Spain, and Italy. This week, Members of the European Parliament also approved the establishment of a Ukraine Instrument worth 50 billion euros. Markéta Gregorová, a Member of the European Parliament for the Pirates party, has long emphasized the need for free trade for Ukraine as a tool to strengthen its economy.

On the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Members of the European Parliament are calling for more ammunition and weapons for Kyiv, as well as stricter enforcement of sanctions against Russia. "After two years of war in Ukraine, we, as key partners supporting Ukraine, still face numerous challenges. Recent developments in the war have shown how essential it is that, within our assistance, we address a number of critical shortcomings. We need to initiate a serious dialogue with defense industry companies to ensure that the production and supply of ammunition, grenades, or missiles take precedence over orders from third countries," explains Gregorová.

The latest aid instrument, approved by Members of the European Parliament last October, provides Ukraine with an additional 50 billion euros. However, the resolution states that this alone will not be enough. The EU should now focus on its own technological development and new, stricter sanctions against the Kremlin. "The European Peace Instrument must be transformed into a platform that focuses much more on incentives to supply the most modern military technologies to Ukraine. As part of further steps in response to the dynamics of the conflict, the EU should also consider sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry, including individual sanctions against top officials of Rosatom," continues Gregorová.

I repeatedly emphasize that Ukraine still needs the easing of trade measures with the EU. This is an essential part of our solidarity and the only way for Ukraine to export, in particular, its agricultural products, which represent a significant portion of Ukrainian income. Ukraine needs to finance its daily operations as normally as possible, maintain the functioning of institutions in a war-torn state, and, above all, finance its own resistance," adds the Member of the European Parliament.
