In Luxembourg, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Hungary will use all political and legal means to prevent the REPowerEU proposal, which focuses on banning the import of Russian energy. Previously, the European Council had reached a negotiating position regarding a draft regulation on the gradual phasing out of Russian natural gas imports.

Péter Szijjártó stated that the Hungarian government may take legal action to block the ban on the import of Russian energy. The adoption of this proposal is in direct contradiction to EU law. In fact, it is a sanctioning measure, which therefore requires unanimous approval, not a qualified majority. Hungary voted against the proposal, but the European Commission nevertheless approved it by a qualified majority.
