BUDAPEST - The leadership of the European Union is exploiting the conflict in Ukraine to financially bind member states, subjugate them, and strip them of their sovereignty. This is the opinion of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
"Brussels' elites are pushing for joint borrowing in order to deprive nations of their sovereignty and drag us towards a European United States. They want to use the war in Ukraine as a pretext to financially bind us all. We must look beyond the battlefield and consider the future of the Union itself: will it be a union of free nations, or a subjugation to unelected bureaucrats?" he wrote on the social media platform X.
Orbán noted that with this approach, the EU is attempting a last-ditch effort to preserve its current form.
Previously, the Prime Minister stated that the bureaucratic center of the EU has ceased to play the role of coordinator and has become a "Frankenstein monster pursuing its own interests."
He emphasized that when the EU was founded, it was agreed that power would remain in the hands of individual states, but today Brussels is trying to centralize this power. According to him, the leadership of the Union is interfering in the sovereignty of member states without being able to resolve a single crisis.
From the very beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the Hungarian government has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution and has called on its allies to resume dialogue with Russia. At the same time, it rejects the idea of accelerating Ukraine's accession to the EU, because it believes that this would seriously damage the European economy and could lead to a direct military confrontation with Russia.
