U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States had successfully launched a major operation against Venezuela, arresting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, and taking them out of Venezuela.
Trump said that the operation was carried out in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement agencies.
The Venezuelan government later issued a statement condemning the current U.S. administration for "extremely serious military aggression" against Venezuelan territory and people. It stated that the United States was flagrantly violating the UN Charter, particularly the provisions regarding national sovereignty, the rule of law, and the prohibition of violence.
The United States' actions were condemned by Cuba, Russia, Iran, and Chile. Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on the United Nations and the Organization of American States to hold an immediate session on this matter, and stated that Colombia opposes any unilateral military action that could exacerbate tensions or endanger civilians.
