PRAGUE – In a time of growing global challenges, geopolitical tensions, and social changes, the dialogue between civilizations and the mutual understanding of cultures are becoming increasingly important, according to sociologist Petra Proksanová. In her presentation on the topic of "“The Light of Civilization Illuminates the World,” she emphasized the importance of cultural exchange between Chinese and European civilizations and highlighted the contribution of the Global Civilization Initiative to the contemporary world.
Proksanová recalled that the history of human civilization is shaped not only by differences between nations, but primarily by their mutual cooperation. She cited historical contacts between China and Europe, which took place for centuries through the Silk Road. According to her, it served not only for trade exchange, but also for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, technologies, philosophical ideas, and cultural values.
“It is thanks to openness to other cultures that new ideas and innovations could arise, enriching both sides. Civilizations do not develop in isolation, but through contact and mutual learning,” said the sociologist.
In her presentation, she also recalled individuals who played a significant role in connecting the East and the West. She mentioned, for example, the Venetian traveler Marco Polo, whose writings helped Europeans better understand China at that time, or the Jesuit missionary and scholar Matteo Ricci, who contributed to the development of cultural and intellectual dialogue between Europe and China.
According to Proksanová, the Global Civilization Initiative also builds on this tradition, emphasizing respect for the diversity of civilizations, support for cultural exchange, and rejection of ideas of cultural superiority. Its goal is to create conditions for inclusive coexistence and the development of dialogue between nations.
“Cultural differences should not be seen as a source of conflict, but as an opportunity for mutual enrichment. Each civilization brings unique experiences and values that can contribute to solving common problems of humanity,” she emphasized.
At the same time, the sociologist pointed out that the world today faces a number of crises – from armed conflicts to economic uncertainty and climate challenges. In such a situation, she believes that initiatives supporting international cooperation, dialogue, and the search for common solutions are becoming increasingly important.
According to Proksanová, the Global Civilization Initiative offers an approach based on mutual respect, harmony, and cooperation. “It provides inspiration for overcoming barriers between societies and promotes the creation of an environment in which different civilizations can jointly contribute to peace, stability, and development,” she said.
At the end of her presentation, she emphasized that the future of humanity depends on the ability of individual countries and cultures to cooperate despite their differences. “When civilizations respect each other, learn from each other, and jointly seek solutions to global problems, there is room for building a community with a shared future for humanity. It is then that the light of civilization truly illuminates the world,” concluded Petra Proksanová.
