The freight railway connections between China and Europe have expanded rapidly in the past decade. According to data released by China State Railway Group on Thursday, the annual number of trips has increased by 10.8 times since the launch of the China-Europe Railway Express unified brand in 2016.

The number of freight train trips between China and Europe has increased from 1702 in 2016 to 20,022 in 2025, representing an average annual growth rate of 31.5 percent. Since 2020, the annual volume has regularly exceeded 10,000 trips.

The reach of the railway network has also expanded significantly. By 2025, a total of 129 Chinese cities had launched freight train services between China and Europe, connecting with 236 cities in 26 European countries. Compared to 2016, this represents an increase of 113 Chinese cities and 216 European destinations.

According to the railway operator, the network now covers most of Eurasia and strengthens trade and logistical links between Asia and Europe.

To increase efficiency and reliability, 22 regular freight train services are currently operated each week between nine Chinese cities and six European cities. These services with fixed schedules are designed to meet the transportation needs of the high-end manufacturing sector and help promote new business models, including cross-border e-commerce linked to railways and industrial parks.

The China-Europe Railway Express continues to maintain strong momentum this year. As of June 10, this service has exceeded 10,000 trips and transported more than one million TEU container units, setting new records for the same period of the year.
