VATICAN CITY - Routes with tactile maps and QR codes leading to the Holy Gate of the Vatican Basilica have been made available. A jubilee marked by increasing accessibility, overcoming barriers and making the experience easier for pilgrims. This is the intention of the three new routes with inclusive signage that, from 1 July, help to reach the Holy Gate of St Peter's Basilica from Piazza del Risorgimento, Piazza Pia and Piazza Sant'Uffizio.
The project, promoted by the Dicastery for Evangelisation, the Italian government's Extraordinary Commissioner for the Jubilee and the Civil Protection of the City of Rome, aims to make the public aware of the access routes to St Peter's Colonnade and to highlight the resting places, toilets, fountains and special assistance through tactile and voice maps. In addition, QR codes allow audio files and simplified texts to be downloaded.
All textual, audio and visual content is available in Italian and English, Italian and international sign language, Italian and English Easy-to-Read and alternative and augmentative communication through pictograms. The texts are accessible thanks to special fonts (Test Me), appropriate font size and colour contrast, making them easy to read even for people with visual impairment or dyslexia.
