WARSAW - Today, Poland will take a crucial decision on the future of the country. Nearly 30 million people will decide on their new leader when they go to the polls, the result of which will deeply divide voters as two distinctly different candidates emerge and the inevitable question of what it all might mean for the EU.
Opposition candidate Rafał Trzaskowski is a pro-European centrist and the current mayor of Warsaw. The historian Karol Nawrocki is supported by the Law and Justice Party (PiS) and endorsed by associates of US President Donald Trump.
Those living abroad could help influence the vote. Around 700,000 Polish citizens live outside the country, including a significant number in the UK, and their votes are expected to have a significant impact on who wins the election.
The vote is important not only for Poland, but also for the European Union, which is facing growing dissatisfaction with many of its policies across member states.
