PRAGUE – Collecting fine art is not only an expensive but beloved hobby, but also a practical way to store money and a suitable investment. It has traditionally been popular in the Czech Republic, where auction battles, both in halls and on the internet, take place on a regular basis. As was the case last year, the Prague-based company ADOLF LOOS APARTMENT AND GALLERY dominated domestic auctions in 2025. Another top performer was Galerie Kodl.
Millions in tens
The most successful auction house in the Czech Republic, Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery, has once again confirmed its dominant position on the Czech auction market. Let us introduce the three most expensive paintings of the 2025 auction year.
The most expensive work sold at auction in the Czech Republic in 2025 was an iconic oil painting by Bohumil Kubišta - Still Life painting, which was auctioned in November this year for a respectable 44,165,000 CZK It also became the most expensive still life painting ever sold at auction in Central and Eastern Europe. It was an absolute artistic and collector's gem, which we can consider an icon of Czech Cubism from the painter's heyday. In the pivotal year of 1913, Kubišta created only five Cubist oil paintings, which added to the uniqueness of the offered work, as all other works are located in state galleries and foundations.
In the same auction house, Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery, the most expensive painting ever sold at auction in the Czech Republic was also auctioned last year, an oil painting by František Kupka - Conception/Danae (Conception), whose price rose to a record high CZK 126,500,000. The work thus became the painter's record in the Czech Republic. The Adolf Loos Apartment and Gallery auction house has once again confirmed its dominant position on the Czech auction market.

Next is the Kodl Gallery.
Large format canvas from Emil Filla - Reader, from 1930, became the second most expensive painting sold at auction in 2025. The work, also known as Woman with a book, hit the market for the second time and was auctioned off for 32,400,000 CZK at the Kodl Gallery. In 1932, Filla exhibited the painting at Mánes in Prague on his 50th birthday. Third place in this year's imaginary auction ranking went to a double-sided work by Josef Čapek: The Prostitute / Two Children, which was auctioned off for 30,600,000 CZK. The front of the work depicted an expressive portrait of a woman from 1917, while the reverse side featured a Cubist painting of two children.
