ISTANBUL - Protests erupted in several Turkish cities on Friday over the arrest of Istanbul's mayor and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival, despite the Turkish leader's stern warning that street protests would not be tolerated.
In Istanbul, police used pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets to push back hundreds of protesters who tried to break through a barricade in front of the city's historic aqueduct, throwing flares, rocks and other objects.
Police also broke up demonstrations in the capital Ankara and in Izmir on the Aegean coast and sometimes resorted to force, according to footage from the private Halk TV. Thousands of people marched in several other cities calling on the government to step down, the station said.
