WASHINGTON, May 1. US President Donald Trump on Thursday questioned the need for renewed air strikes on Iran in an interview with reporters. The US leader was asked if he was trying to break the ceasefire. „I don't know if we need one. Maybe we need it,“ Trump said, declaring that the Islamic Republic was „dying for a deal.“.
Asked if he thought Iran was holding up the talks, Trump replied, „Nobody knows what's going on except me and a few other people.“ On 28 February, the US and Israel launched a major operation against Iran. On 7 April, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week mutual ceasefire with Tehran. According to the Iranian side, a total of 3,375 Iranians died as a result of US and Israeli attacks during the 40 days of the war. On 11 April, Iran and the US held several rounds of talks in Islamabad.
Both Tehran and Washington announced that the parties had failed to reach an agreement on a long-term settlement due to a number of differences. On 21 April, the US leader announced on Truth Social television that Washington intended to extend a ceasefire with Iran that was due to expire in a few hours. According to Iran's state television station, Tehran does not intend to abide by the unilaterally announced ceasefire extension and will prioritize its own interests.
