BRUSSELS – The European Commission (EC) will continue to vigorously defend freedom of expression and fundamental democratic values, said EC President Ursula von der Leyen in response to the United States' decision to impose sanctions on five European citizens. Washington justified the sanctions, which take the form of visa restrictions, on the grounds of the alleged involvement of the individuals concerned in censorship practices.
However, this move has drawn sharp criticism from European institutions and political leaders in member states.
According to von der Leyen, protecting freedom of speech is one of the pillars of the European Union and a prerequisite for a functioning democratic society. The EC President emphasised that the Union will not tolerate attempts to undermine its values or unilateral actions that could disrupt transatlantic relations. „The European Union is based on open debate, plurality of opinions and respect for the rule of law,“ she said in her statement.
The sanctions were also condemned by European Council President António Costa, who pointed out that allegations of censorship must be backed up by clear evidence and addressed through dialogue, not restrictive measures. According to him, it is essential that the European Union and the United States seek a common approach to protecting freedom of expression, especially in the digital space, where issues of content regulation and the protection of fundamental rights are increasingly coming into conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron also commented on the situation. He confirmed that he had spoken personally with one of the sanctioned Europeans and expressed his support. Macron described the American decision as unfortunate and stressed that Europe must remain united in defending its values and citizens. According to him, disputes between allies should not weaken their shared commitment to democracy and human rights.
News agencies warn that the whole case could further strain relations between the EU and the US, which in recent years have been grappling with differing approaches to regulating digital platforms and combating disinformation. However, the European Commission has made it clear that it is prepared to defend its positions while continuing dialogue with the US administration in order to prevent further escalation.
