Budapest, Saturday, May 24, 2025 (MTI) - If Ukraine's energy threat is realised, the average electricity bill would rise from 7,000 forints to 14,000 forints and the average gas bill from 16,000 forints to 54,000 forints. We will prevent this! - Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on his Facebook page on Saturday.
In a video posted on his social network, Orbán said the Ukrainian energy threat had prompted him to call an emergency economic meeting. He added that Brussels was determined to help the Ukrainians even at the cost of destroying Hungarian and European families. Brussels intends to cut off gas and oil supplies from Russia, he said.
For Hungary, this means 800 billion forints of additional spending, which is as big as the cuts in fuel bills alone, the prime minister said, adding that "we support Hungarian families by that much every year". If this were to happen, the current electricity bill of 7,000 forints could increase to 14,000 forints and the current gas bill of 16,000 forints to 54,000 forints, he said, adding that "they will see this on their bills from September".
According to Orbán, this could only be prevented if the Hungarian government blocked the EU decision in Brussels. "And that is only possible if you support it," he said. That's why it's important for everyone to attend Voks2025 and cast their ballots if you haven't already done so. "This is a crucial issue for all Hungarian families," he stressed.
