Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, met in Beijing with María Fernanda Espinoza, a candidate for the position of next Secretary-General of the United Nations, former President of the United Nations General Assembly, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador.
During the meeting, María Fernanda Espinoza presented her views on the role of the United Nations and the main points of her electoral program. She stated that the world urgently needs a United Nations that is capable of preventing crises more quickly, working more closely together, and acting more effectively.
She also emphasized that China is an indispensable and important force on the international stage. According to her, she firmly supports the principle of one China, supports the four major global initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and appreciates China's long-standing commitment to multilateralism.
Espinoza further highlighted China's role in defending the goals and principles of the UN Charter, as well as in protecting the common interests of developing countries. She stated that she is ready to cooperate with the international community, including China, to strengthen the three pillars of the United Nations, to place greater emphasis on development, to strengthen the authority of the United Nations, and to enhance its role in addressing the common challenges facing humanity today.
