Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on Tuesday, at a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting, comprehensively outlined China's contributions to the work of the United Nations and the promotion of international cooperation.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the People's Republic of China's restoration to its lawful place in the United Nations. Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, stated on this occasion that China, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has actively contributed to the work of the United Nations for 55 years.

At the open debate of the Security Council on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-based international system, he emphasized that China continues to uphold its long-standing principles, even during a period of international change and uncertainty.

According to Wang Yi, China's vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, as well as the four major global initiatives proposed by China, have received widespread support from the international community.

Support for Peace and Dialogue

Wang Yi stated that, in a time of frequent international conflicts, China supports peaceful solutions and dialogue among the parties involved.

As an example, he cited China's approach to resolving international crises, including the establishment of the Group of Friends of the Ukrainian Crisis within the United Nations. According to him, China contributes to maintaining world peace through its proposals and initiatives in this way.

Support for the Development of the Global South

The Foreign Minister also highlighted China's activities in the area of development.

According to him, the Global Development Initiative has mobilized more than US$23 billion in financial resources, supported more than 1,800 cooperation projects, implemented nearly 10,000 programs focused on capacity building in developing countries, and trained more than 200,000 professionals in various fields.

"This has provided a strong boost to the development of countries in the Global South," said Wang Yi.

Assistance during Health Crises

Wang Yi also recalled China's assistance during health crises.

He stated that in 2015, China fully supported three West African countries in their fight against the Ebola epidemic. At the same time, he declared China's readiness to assist the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda in dealing with the current outbreak of this disease.

"At this moment, Chinese medical teams are working directly in the field, fighting this disease side by side with our African brothers," he said.

Support for Multilateralism

According to Wang Yi, China takes on the responsibility for the functioning of the international system in a time of increasing challenges to multilateralism.

He recalled that China is the second largest contributor to the UN regular budget and actively utilizes the China-UN Peace and Development Fund, as well as the Fund for Global Development and South-South Cooperation.

He also mentioned the establishment of several new international initiatives supported by China, including the International Mediation Organization and the World Data Organization. China has also proposed the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization and has offered to host the secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.

"These are all concrete steps that we are taking to build the pillars of multilateralism," emphasized Wang Yi.

Global Governance Forum in Xiamen

After the meeting, Wang Yi announced to reporters that China will host a forum in Xiamen, Fujian Province, this fall, focused on issues of global governance.
