Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to play a more active role in reforming global governance and promoting a fairer and more balanced international order.
In his speech at the "SCO Plus" meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, he said that the current world is undergoing profound changes and that the importance of a multipolar system is growing, in which countries of the Global South should also have greater representation.
Xi Jinping emphasized that the goal should be a world based on equality among states, mutual respect, the rule of law, dialogue, and cooperation. According to him, all countries, regardless of their size, economic strength, or wealth, should have equal rights, opportunities, and the ability to participate in shaping international rules.
The Global South should gain a stronger voice
The Chinese president pointed out that the growing importance of the Global South is gradually changing the international balance of power. According to him, this trend is leading towards a multipolar world and is irreversible in the long term.
Therefore, developing countries should have greater representation and a stronger voice in international institutions and in decision-making on global issues.
At the same time, he called for rejecting double standards, interference in the internal affairs of other states, and policies based on force. According to him, major powers should set an example by adhering to international law and working together to solve global problems.
The UN should remain at the center of the global system
Xi Jinping devoted a significant part of his speech to the United Nations. He emphasized the need to strengthen its authority and simultaneously improve coordination between global and regional multilateral mechanisms.
According to him, the international community should also focus more on development issues, openness, and cooperation.
He described the digital and technological disparities between different countries as an important challenge. According to Xi Jinping, the development of artificial intelligence and other new technologies should not only benefit part of the world but should be accessible to a wider range of states.
SCO today includes half of the world's population
Xi Jinping recalled that over 25 years of existence, the SCO has grown significantly and now connects countries representing approximately half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy.
According to him, the organization has demonstrated that states of different sizes, political systems, and levels of economic development can cooperate based on dialogue and mutual respect.
China also wants to continue using the SCO as a platform for economic cooperation in Eurasia. Xi Jinping called for better connectivity between individual centers of growth through high-quality projects of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The goal is to strengthen trade, infrastructure, and shared prosperity across Asia and Europe.
Partnership instead of blocs, and dialogue instead of confrontation
Xi Jinping also urged member states and SCO partners to continue expanding the "SCO Plus" format and jointly promote peace, development, and economic cooperation.
According to him, international relations should be based on partnership rather than creating closed alliances, and on dialogue rather than confrontation.
Reforming global governance, according to the Chinese president, should be based on the principles of joint planning, joint construction, and shared benefits. This is how Beijing wants to strengthen the involvement of a greater number of states in international decision-making.
In Bishkek, Xi Jinping presented the SCO not only as a regional platform for security and economic cooperation, but also as one of the tools that, according to the Chinese vision, should contribute to a broader transformation of the global system.
