Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a major shared interest between China and the United States. Chinese President Xi Jinping said this during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday.

Xi recalled that the Taiwan issue is the most important topic in China-US relations. According to him, a proper resolution of this issue can ensure the overall stability of bilateral relations.

However, if handled incorrectly, Xi said, it could lead to clashes and even conflicts that could seriously jeopardise the entire relationship between the two countries.

The Chinese president also stressed that „Taiwan independence“ and peace in the Taiwan Strait are as incompatible as fire and water.
