President Xi Jinping has warned of a catastrophic escalation of conflict in the Middle East and called for an immediate ceasefire. The Chinese leader said the use of force is not the solution and the international community must act before it is too late.
In a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin He stressed Xi Jinpingthat both Israel and Iran must stop hostilities and protect civilians. He called for a return to the negotiating table and a revival of a political solution to the Iranian nuclear dispute.
Xi said it was imperative that the powers with influence over the parties involved - especially the members of the UN Security Council - take responsibility and intervene in favour of de-escalation. China, he said, will continue its diplomatic efforts to uphold justice and contribute to peace in the region.
Putin described the Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as a dangerous precedent and pledged to work closely with China to restore stability.
The two Presidents also highlighted the strategic trust and high level of cooperation between China and Russia, while reaffirming their commitment to further deepening bilateral relations.
