MUNICH - The traditional Munich Security Conference begins today in the Bavarian capital, attracting the world's most prominent figures in politics, diplomacy and the security community. Dozens of heads of state and government, around 100 ministers and hundreds of other experts, analysts and representatives of international organisations have gathered in Munich.
The main theme of this year's event is the current security situation in the world, ongoing armed conflicts and the search for ways to resolve them diplomatically and politically. Discussions will also focus on the future of transatlantic relations, strengthening the defence capabilities of European states and new security challenges related to cyberspace or artificial intelligence. The organisers expect intensive discussions not only in the official programme but also in the bilateral fringe meetings.
The Czech Republic is represented at the conference by President Petr Pavel, who is expected to speak in a panel debate on the role of Central Europe in the current security architecture. The Czech delegation also includes Foreign Minister Petr Macinka and Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna. They are due to attend the meeting with their counterparts from EU member states and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
The Munich Security Conference is considered one of the most important platforms for open discussion of global risks. In the past, a number of key speeches have been made here that have influenced the future direction of international politics. This year's event comes at a time of heightened tensions in several regions of the world, which diplomatic sources say underlines the urgency of finding common solutions.
While the results of negotiations are not formally binding, they often foreshadow further diplomatic steps and political decisions at the international level. This year's conference is also expected to provide a number of important impulses for the European and global security debate.
