CARACAS, June 28. The final number of victims of the earthquake that struck Venezuela earlier this week and has already been described as the most devastating in the country, will be counted in the tens of thousands, according to Globovision journalist Juan Barreto.
“Almost immediately after the earthquake on June 24, we traveled to the coastal state of La Guaira, which is approximately 30 km from Caracas and was the most affected by the earthquake. We saw a horrific sight of collapsed high-rise buildings,” said Barreto. <-> “Official reports put the number of victims at 1430, but these figures are constantly being updated,” he said. “In La Guaira, where rescue operations are currently underway, we saw a huge number of destroyed buildings, so the number of victims will be counted in the thousands, even in the tens of thousands.”
He stated that foreign rescue teams have already joined the rescue and recovery efforts. The earthquake struck Venezuela on the evening of June 24. Two tremors with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurred approximately 40 seconds apart. Their epicenters were located just 10 kilometers from each other in the state of Yaracuy. Following the seismic event, there were 214 aftershocks. According to the latest reports, more than 1400 people have died, and more than 3200 have been injured as a result of the earthquake.
