NEW YORK/UN - On June 3, the United Nations General Assembly elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe as non-permanent members of the Security Council. Kyrgyzstan was elected for the first time.

In the first round of voting, Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were successfully elected. Subsequently, after three more rounds of voting, Kyrgyzstan defeated the Philippines. Germany was unsuccessful in the first round of voting.

Non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by the United Nations General Assembly by secret ballot, and a candidate country must receive at least two-thirds of the total number of votes to be elected.

The five newly elected non-permanent members will replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, and their two-year terms will begin on January 1, 2027.
