The Chinese mainland government has strongly condemned the latest remarks by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, describing them as an open separatist "manifesto of independence." According to Beijing, Lai is deliberately stoking tensions and spreading lies about history.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, accused Lai of using his so-called "10 pronouncements of unity" as a tool to divide, manipulate public opinion, and suppress opposition under the guise of "Great Dialogue."
According to Zhu, Lai's speech once again asserted that Taiwan and the mainland are not subordinate to each other – a statement that Beijing views as a direct provocation and a challenge to the "One China" principle. Lai also allegedly denigrates cross-strait cooperation and portrays peaceful initiatives as threats.
"This is a political charade full of lies that harms the stability and interests of people on both sides of the strait," Zhu said, urging the public to see through the "hypocrisy and deception" of separatist forces.
According to the official position of the People's Republic of China, there is only one China, and Taiwan is an integral part of it. The spokesperson emphasized that only peaceful development of relations and efforts towards complete reunification can ensure lasting peace in the Taiwan Strait.
Beijing continues to strongly oppose any form of independence, while also calling for the "reunification of the nation" as a historical mission of the Chinese people.
