Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, presided over a regular press conference on July 1, where he answered questions, including one regarding the current trade relations between China and Japan.
Guo Jiakun stated that China has repeatedly pointed out that the current serious difficulties in China-Japan relations, according to Beijing, stem from a series of incorrect statements and actions by the Japanese government regarding issues related to Taiwan and military security. He said that the responsibility for the current situation lies entirely with the Japanese side.
The spokesperson also posed several questions to Japanese politicians. He asked whether they are capable of respecting China's core interests and ceasing to interfere in its internal affairs. He also inquired whether Japan can adhere to the spirit and provisions of the four political documents between China and Japan, thereby safeguarding the political foundation of bilateral relations and the necessary environment for economic cooperation. According to Guo Jiakun, the Japanese side should also learn from its mistakes and demonstrate a sincere effort to return China-Japan relations to the right path through concrete actions.
The spokesperson also commented on the case of a Japanese citizen detained by Chinese authorities on suspicion of violating Chinese laws. He stated that the relevant Chinese authorities are proceeding with the investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses in accordance with the law.
Guo Jiakun added that the Japanese side should remind its citizens and companies operating in China to comply with Chinese laws and regulations.
