Sun Lei, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, spoke after the adoption of a resolution by the UN General Assembly on the review of the status of the Human Rights Council. In his speech, he emphasized that the issue of human rights should not be used as a political tool to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, nor as a means of pressure and confrontation within the United Nations.

Sun Lei stated that the assessment of the state of human rights in individual countries should not be based on one-sided standards of other states or on the application of double standards. He said that it is essential to maintain an objective, impartial, and non-politicized approach so that the Human Rights Council can fulfill its mission in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.

China welcomes the unanimous adoption of the resolution by the General Assembly, which reaffirms the status of the Human Rights Council as a subsidiary body of the General Assembly. At the same time, he pointed out that in recent years there have been increasing attempts to politicize and misuse the activities of the Council, and therefore it is crucial to ensure its impartiality, objectivity, and non-selectivity.

Sun Lei further stated that the review of the status of the Human Rights Council is of fundamental importance not only for its future functioning but also for the protection of the interests of the majority of UN member states. According to the Chinese position, the entire process should be led by the member states themselves, focus on the current status of the Council, and should not be confused with other reform initiatives of the United Nations or with debates about the effectiveness of its activities.

The representative of China also emphasized that his country attaches great importance to respecting and protecting human rights and strives for their further development within the framework of Chinese modernization. He recalled that China has been elected as a member of the Human Rights Council six times and has long participated in the development of global governance in the field of human rights as an active participant, advocate, and promoter.

In conclusion, Sun Lei said that China is ready to continue cooperating with all member states in fulfilling the goals and principles of the UN Charter, promoting common values of humanity, building a fairer, more reasonable, and inclusive system of global governance of human rights, and supporting the Human Rights Council in performing its tasks.
