Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing on Wednesday that China appreciates Iran's commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons while recognising its legitimate right to peaceful use of nuclear energy. The talks were held with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi.
Wang Yi reiterated China's principled stance on the Iranian issue and stressed that Beijing has actively supported peace and encouraged dialogue since the beginning of the current tensions. He said the situation in the region is at a critical crossroads between war and peace and it is essential to stop the fighting immediately and prevent its resumption.
At the same time, China supports Iran in protecting its national sovereignty and security and appreciates Tehran's efforts to seek a political solution through diplomacy. Wang Yi also urged the international community to restore safe and stable maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and called for a swift response from all parties concerned.
He further stated that the Gulf and Middle East states should take responsibility for their own future and build a regional security framework based on common interests, cooperation and development through dialogue. He said China was ready to continue to play a constructive role in de-escalating tensions and promoting peace negotiations.
Iranian Minister Araghchi reported on the developments in the negotiations between Iran and the US and stressed that political crises cannot be resolved by military means. Iran, he said, will defend its sovereignty and national dignity, but at the same time seeks a long-term solution through dialogue.
He added that the issue of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz can be resolved quickly and praised China's constructive role in easing tensions. Iran also expressed confidence in China and its interest in deepening cooperation and coordination on international issues.
